Since its inception in 1958, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District has constructed extensive facilities to serve customers in its 122 square-mile service area, which includes mountainous terrain. This region is subject to triple-digit summer heat, winter freezes, landslides and seismic activity.

The District typically serves some 25,000 acre-feet of potable water annually, all purchased from Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. (1 acre-foot equals 325,900 gallons) There is no local source of potable water within District boundaries. The potable water system includes 25 tanks, 24 pumping stations, 394 miles of main lines, the 10,000 acre-foot Las Virgenes Reservoir and the Westlake Filtration Plant, capable of producing 15 million gallons of water a day.

It’s not enough to simply build the water infrastructure that serves the region, it must be operated and maintained by highly trained personnel. Systems are monitored 24/7 and regularly scheduled maintenance keeps the system operating efficiently.
