Wildlife of the District
LVMWD teamed up with the National Wildlife Federation in 2023 to install wildlife cameras across District property. LVMWD deeply values the wellbeing of the ecosystem in our service area. Our team monitors the cameras as part of our commitment to maintaining a healthy watershed.
Malibu Creek Watershed is one of the largest discrete watersheds that flow into Santa Monica Bay. It is home to California Quail, mountain lions, bobcats, mule deer, coyotes, gray foxes, and much more. All species are vital to sustaining the biodiversity of our environment.
LVMWD has also implemented the use of raptor perches within District property to mitigate overpopulation of rodents and other critters. Raptor perches provide a welcoming place for raptors to rest and encourage them into the area. Strategic placement of these perches increases the likelihood that raptors will hunt mice, rats, gophers, snakes, and other vertebrates nearby. This eliminates the need to use toxic pesticides which could harm local wildlife through toxic bioaccumulation.
