Indoor Conservation

Saving water indoors can be accomplished by a combination of installing devices that use less water and through some simple changes in behavior.

Water Saving Devices

Certain fixtures and appliances in your home may be using more water than necessary. Newer technologies have emerged that combine water efficiency with everyday functions. The benefit from these newer devices is that they do the “thinking” for you. Some examples include:

  • New high efficiency toilets use just 1.28 gallons per flush – they work well, too
  • Water-saving laundry washers that may save 30 gallons or more per load
  • New water-saving showerheads that use less but still provide a comfortable spray
  • Many newer dish washers use a fraction of the water needed by older models
  • A faucet aerator reduces water flow; ideal for kitchens and bathrooms

Water Saving Practices

  • Check your home for leaks and repair promptly; a dripping faucet is very costly!
  • Wash only full loads of laundry or dishes
  • Limit showers to 5 minutes or less
  • A shower typically uses less water than a bath
  • Keep a chilled pitcher of water in the refrigerator
  • Turn off the water while brushing teeth or shaving – you’ll save 6+ gallons
  • Don’t send cooking or rinse water down the drain – use it to water plants
