Dear Customer:
On April 14, 2009, the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District (LVMWD) Board of Directors adopted a water shortage response program resulting in the assignment of water budgets for each customer. The program became effective July 1, 2009 and remains in effect.
This action is in response to the assignment of a water allocation to LVMWD by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, rising from judicial limitations on the amount of water that can be transferred to our region from the north, and storage reservoirs that have been drawn down to low levels as a result of three years of below-average precipitation.
In order for the budget program to succeed, the District needs your cooperation. If the District’s allocation is exceeded, substantial financial penalties from Metropolitan will be assessed, which must be passed onto our customers.
The budget program provides you, the customer, with discretion and flexibility on how you use water. Customers already implementing water-wise practices will not be impacted to a great degree. Homes and business that devote a great deal of water toward landscaping will need to re-evaluate those practices. The old ways of using water indiscriminately are not sustainable. With continued restrictions on pumping to southern California, and uncertainty as to future rain or snow events, it is clear the need to conserve will be long-term and systemic. Now will be a good time for property owners to review their landscape choices and the amount of area irrigated.
The District expects there will be questions about this program. After having read the information, if you still have questions, please call Customer Service at 818.251.2100.
Your cooperation and assistance in meeting this challenge is appreciated.
