In a field of 43 competitors, Calabasas High School's Solar Cup team, sponsored by LVMWD, finished third at the annual competition held May 19-21, 2017 at Lake Skinner, near Temecula. The team also placed first among Foothill Region high schools for boat endurance and their water conservation PSA.
Organized annually by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the seven-month-long Solar Cup program challenges high school students to build a 16-foot, single-seat boat powered only by the sun. Students then test their skill and quality of their boat design by competing in both endurance and sprint races at Lake Skinner.
Students learn design, engineering, electrical, propulsion systems, construction and the importance of reducing mass to conserve power.
