In a field of 38 competitors, LVMWD’s two Solar Cup teams performed well at the annual competition conducted at Lake Skinner, near Temecula.
Sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, each team builds an electric boat that uses solar panels to charge its batteries.
Students learn design, engineering, electrical, propulsion systems, construction and the importance of reducing mass to conserve power.
Over a three-day period, each team participates in endurance and sprint trials, testing the effectiveness of their design and execution.
This year, Calabasas High School finished 7th overall and took 1st place in the 200-meter sprint competition among Foothill Region schools.
David Gonzales School placed 16th overall.
